Manners cost nothing

In business, the experience of a customer, client or potential relationship is everything. If you have a great product, yet the customer service is atrocious, things will be said and sales will be affected. It’s inevitable.

Customer experience is not limited to the customer service standard however. Your brand is everything from how your message makes your audience feel and your initial welcome or meeting, to how you terminate a contract or package a product. Every touch point matters.

You are your Brand

Business is one aspect of life, your personal brand however affects each and every part. How you behave, portray yourself and treat others is effectively what people buy-in to, whether that’s buying into a friendship, relationship or business association.

Some questions to ask of your personal brand:

  • How do you leave people feeling after an interaction with yourself?

  • What is it people say about you when you’re not around?

  • How would you describe your brand in 3 words?

  • How would someone else describe your brand in 3 words?

If you’re not sure how someone else might talk about you, ask around for an honest opinion. If you’re hesitant to ask, maybe you know the answer wouldn’t be what you’d like to hear…

Second shot at a first impression?

A brand can no doubt be built over time, but a brand can also be broken in an instant. Someone’s first impression can last a lifetime.

When walking into a shop, whether or not you’re aware of it, your mind is judging how the building smells, what the aesthetics are like, how welcoming the staff are, whether the clothes are organised neatly etc.

If you want to ensure your personal brand is how you want it to be, ask yourself which touch points you have with people, in person and through other means of communication, then think about how you could improve them.

  • What’s your automatic response when someone messages your page on Facebook?

  • How do you answer the phone?

  • How do you follow up interactions after the fact? Do you send ‘Thank You’ notes or emails to reiterate action points and thank people for their time?

  • What does your body language look like when you first meet someone?
